Whiplash injury is most common with rear-end auto accidents, but it also occurs from sports accidents and other trauma. During the accident, a person’s head and neck can be hyperextended, hyper flexed, and/or rotated as a result of the impact during the accident. As the neck hyperextends, hyper flexes or rotates, the spinal nerves roots can be stretched, bruised, or compressed resulting in spinal nerve root injury or radiculopathy. When this occurs, the result is spasms in those muscles where the nerves are innervated making them short and tight. These muscle spasms put a traction effect on multiple nerve roots thereby causing more nerve root injuries and more muscle spasms. This initiates a vicious pain cycle and patients suffer from chronic pain in many different parts of the body.
